1 litre mixture of CO and CO2 is taken. This is passed through a tube containing red-hot charcoal. The volume now becomes 1.6 liters. The volumes. are measured under the same conditions. Find the composition of the mixture by volume.

Solution
Let there be x mL CO in the mixture, hence, there will be:
(1000x)mLCO2. The reaction of CO2 with red hot charcoal may be given as:
CO2(g)1vol.(1000−x)+C(s)→2CO(g)2vol.2(1000x)
Total volume of the gas becomes =x+2(1000−x) x+2000−2x=1600 x=400mL ∴ Volume of CO=400mL and volume of CO2=600mL
