Fossils also give an idea about the missing links between various species as well as about various common ancestors of later species. In addition, fossilsgive a clue to the divergent evolution. Even the record of extinct organisms can be obtained through fossil records.Based on the position of fossils in the layers of the Earth's crust, paleontologists can determine which animals predate other animals and which animals lived at the same time. 2)Number of chromosomes is halved during gamete formation. As a result, the number of chromosomes in gamete is half the number of chromosomes in somatic cells. When male and female gametes fuse during fertilization, the number of chromosomes becomes equal to that in somatic cells.
