Question

1.what would happen in the absence of photosynthesis
2.can we say that the insectivorous plants are partially heterotrophs

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,
1) All heterotrophic organisms on earth depend directly or indirectly for food prepared by plants through photosynthesis. Also, photosynthesis maintains oxygen level in the atmosphere. Thus, in absence of photosynthesis, the food and oxygen which are necessary for life on earth will not be available to living organisms. Hence, they will not be able to survive.

2) Insectivorous plants like pitcher plant contains chlorophyll; hence it is capable of preparing its own food like green plants. But insectivorous plants grow in swamps or bog areas where the soil is deficient in nitrogen mineral. So, just to fulfil its nitrogen requirement, they trap the insects and utilise their proteins. For this reason they are called partial heterotrophs.
