Living organism is characterized by the seven specific functions that are performed by living organisms.
This helps them differentiate between living organisms and non-living organisms.
To remember seven characteristics, “MRS GREN” is the term used.
Putting the first letter of each one together, we get the characters: Move, Respire, Sense, Grow, Reproduce, Excrete, Need nutrition.
Growth and development: Young organisms (plants and animals) grow and develop into adults.
Movement: Animals exhibit a wide range of movements.
Reproduction: The biological process by which new organisms (offsprings) are produced from organisms of the same kind.
Respiration: Oxygen is used for the oxidation of nutrients and carbon dioxide is produced.
Responsiveness: All living organisms respond to light, heat, and the changes around them.
Excretion: The process by which metabolic wastes and other non-useful, toxic wastes such as feces are eliminated from an organism is called excretion. Plants also remove their wastes.
Adaptation: Changes in the structure or behavior of an organism that allows it to survive in a particular habitat are called adaptations.
