12 elephants in an elephant camp consumed 240 kg of jaggery everyday. If 3 more elephants were brought to the camp, how much more jaggery would be needed to feed them?

Solution

If the number of elephants in the camp increases, then the quantity of jaggery required will also increase.
This is a case of direct proportion. If 3 more elephants are brought to the camp, then there will be 12 + 3 = 15 elephants in the camp.
Using the formula for direct proportion,
Number of elephantsQuantity of jaggery required = constant
12240 = 15Quantity of jaggery required
Quantity of jaggery required= 24012 × 15 = 300 kg.

Extra jaggery required = 300 - 240
= 60 kg
