Question

15 g sample of BaO2 is heated to 794oC in a close evacuated vessel of 5 litre capacity. How many g of peroxide are converted to BaO(s).
BaO2(s)2BaO(s)+O2(g),KP=0.5 atm.

Solution

KP=(PO2)=0.5atm
PV=mMRT or PV=nRT
no. of moles of O2=n=PVRT=0.5×50.0821×1067=0.028
1 mole of BaO2 gives 1 mole of O2
0.028 moles of BaO2 gives 0.028 moles of O2.
Weight of BaO2 converted to BaO=0.028×MBaO2
=0.028×169=4.732g
