1st shell has 2 electrons 2nd one has 8 and so on. The 3rd shell has a place for 18 electrons. So will it have 18 electrons or just 8?

The general formula is that the nth shell can in principle hold up to $2 (n^{2})$ electrons. So, 3rd shell can hold 18 electrons.
