For ease of writing, each element is represented by a symbol or chemical symbol. The symbol is a kind of abbreviation and is derived from the name of the element. There are different ways in which the symbol is arrived at.
The symbols of some elements are very different from their names in English. These symbols have been derived from their names in other languages such as Latin. Some examples are sodium (Na from natrium) and potassium (K from kalium).
