Question

214.2 g of sugar syrup contains 34.2 g of sugar.

Calculate
(i) molarity of the solution
(ii) mole fraction of sugar in the syrup.

Open in App
Solution

(i) Mass of sugar = 34.2 g

No. of moles of sugar =34.2Mol.mass=34.2342=0.1

Mass of water = (214.2-34.2)=180g=1801000kg

No. of moles of water =18018=10 mole

Molarity =No. of moles of sugarMass of water in kg=0.1180×1000

=0.555M

Thus, the molarity of sugar is 0.555 M

(ii) Total number of moles =10.0+0.1=10.1

Mole fraction of sugar =No. of moles of sugarTotal number of moles

=0.110.1=0.0099

Thus mole fraction of sugar syrup is 0.0099
