Question

4Q. Solid ammonium dichromate (molar mass = 252 g) decomposes as under :

NH42Cr2O7(s) N2(g) + Cr2O3(s) + 4H2O(g)

(a) If 63 g of ammonium dichromate decomposes, what will be the "apparent" loss of mass?
(b) Calculate the mass of chromium(III) oxide formed at the same time. (Cr = 52)

Solution

Dear student
According to the reaction:
252g of ammonium dichromate decomposes then loss in weight is due to release of 28g nitrogen
when 63g of ammonium dichromate decomposes then loss in mass = 28/252 x 63
= 7g

1 mol ammonium dichromate decomposes to produce 1 mol Chromium oxide
252g will decompose to produce 152g chromium oxide
1g will produce =152/252 g Chromium oxide
63g will produce = 152/252 x 63 g
= 38g of Chromium oxide
