Solution

Dear Student,

Oxidizing agents are those chemicals, which oxidize other chemical but reduce itself. Lose electrons

Reducing agents are those substances, which reduces other but oxidizes itself. Gain electrons

In the reaction

ZnO + C --> Zn + CO
Zn+2 + C --> Zn + C+2
oxidation state +2 0 0 +2
a)
1. substance oxidized: C changes its state from 0 to +2. so C is oxidized
2.substance reduced: ZnO changes from +2 state to 0, so ZnO is reduced
3.oxidizing agent: ZnO since it is taking electrons
4. reducing agent: C since it is giving electrons

b) Pack of potato chips is flushed with Nitrogen since Nitrogen is an antioxidant and it prevents the chips from being oxidized.
