QUESTION 2.9(i)

A sample of drinking water was found to be severely contaminated with chloroform (CHCl3) supposed to a carcinogen. The level of contamination was 15 ppm (by mass):

(i) Express this in per cent by mass.

(ii) Determine the molality of chloroform in the water sample.

Solution

(i) Percentage (%) by mass of CHCl3
=Mass of CHCl3Mass of solution×100=(15.0)(106g)×100=1.5×103%

(ii) Molality of solution (m) =Mass of CHCl3Molar massMass of water in kg

=15(12+1+106.5)1061000 kg

=(15g)(119.5 g mol1)×1000106 kg

=1.25×104 mol kg1

=1.25×104 m
