Question

A 1.0 g sample of a pure organic compound containing chlorine is fused with Na2O2 to convert chlorine to NaCl. The sample is then dissolved in water and the chloride precipitated out on adding AgNO3 giving 1.96 g of AgCl. If the molecular weight of organic compound is 147 g/mol, how many chlorine atoms does each molecule contain?

Solution

Moles of AgCl= Moles of chloride =1.96143.5=0.0136
Moles of organic compound =1147=6.8×103
Chlorine atoms in each molecule of organic compound =0.01366.8×103=2
