Question

A 1.00 molal aqueous solution of trichloroacetic acid (CCl3COOH) is heated to its boiling point. The solution has the boiling point of 100.18oC. Determine the van't Hoff factor for trichloroacetic acid. (Kb for water = 0.512 K kg mol1)

Open in App
Solution

CCCl3COOHCCl3COO+H+
ΔTb=(100.18+273)(100273)=0.18K
Molality is 1.
Hence, ΔTb=iKbm=iKb×1
i=0.180.512
i=0.351
