A 250 gm grasshopper moving due south at 20 cm/s (in mid air) collides with another 150 gm grasshopper moving at a speed of 60 cm/s due north. Find the decrease in KE if they move together after collision.

The correct option is C 0.03 J
Mass of grasshopper moving due south
=m1=0.25 kg
& velocity of grasshopper v1=0.20 m/s
Mass of grasshopper moving due north
=m2=0.15 kg
Velocity of grasshopper v2=0.60 m/s

(+ve yaxis have been considered in due North direction)

Applying P.C.L.M along the ydirection:
Pi=Pf
m1v1+m2v2=(m1+m2)vf
0.25×(0.20)+0.15×(0.60)=0.40×vf
vf=0.040.40=0.1 m/s
Decrease in K.E after collision:
ΔK=KEfKEi
KEf=12×(0.40)×(0.1)2=0.002 J
& KEi=12×(0.25)×(0.2)2+12×(0.15)×(0.6)2=0.032 J

ΔKE=0.0020.032=0.03 J
Here, ve sign represents reduction of kinetic energy after collision.
