Question

(a) 30 g of urea (m = 60 g mol1) is dissolved in 846 g of water. Calculate the vapour pressure of water for this solution if vapour pressure of pure water at 298 K is 23.8 mm Hg.
(b) Write two differences betwen ideal solutions and non- ideal solutions.

Solution

(a) Mass of urea (w1)=30 g
Mass of water (w2)=846 g
Molar mass of urea (M1)=60 g mol1
Molar mass of water (M2)=18 g mol1
So
XH2O=PPsP
23.8P323.8=w1(urea)×M2(H2O)M1(urea)×w2(H2O)23.8Ps23.8=30×1860×84623.8Ps=0.0106×23.8=0.2523Ps=23.80.2523=23.55 mm Hg
(b) Ideal solutionsNon - ideal solutions- Obey Raoult's Law- Do not obey Raoult's Law- Heat is neither absorbed nor evolved- Heat can be evolved or absorbed
