Question

A 4 M, 500 mL aqueous solution containing M1+ is made to react with 1 M, 1 L HNO3. As a result, some of M1+ is converted into Mx+ and all HNO3 into NO(g). After the reaction concentration of Mx+ ions becomes 13M value of X is:

Solution

M+1++5HNO3Mx+++2NO
nf=(x1)nf=3nf=(x1) 2 mol1 mol1 mol 1mol
Total volume = 1 + 0.5 = 1.5 L
eq. of Mx+=eq. of HNO3
M×nf×V=M×nf×V
13×(x1)×1.5=1×3×1
(x1)=6x=7
