Question

A 45 cm diameter well penetrates an unconfined aquifer of 30 m thick. Under the steady pumping rate for a long time, the drawdown at two observation wells 10 m and 20 m from the pumping well are 5 m and 3.5 m respectively. What will be the discharge (cubic metre per sec), if the permeability of the aquifer is given as 20 m/day.

Solution

The correct option is C 0.08
Given that: Unconfined aquifer

Diameter of well (dw)=45 cm

Aquifer thickness (H)=30 m

At r1=10 m;h1=305=25 m
At r2=20 m;h2=303.5=26.5 m

and Permeability of the aquifer (K)=20 m/day.

Discharge for unconfined aquifer (Q);
=πk(h22h21)ln(r2r1)

Q=π×20×[(26.5)2(25)2]ln(2010)
Q=7002.496 m3/day
Q=0.081 m3/sec.

Hence, the discharge from the given aquifer is 0.08 m3/sec.

Note:
Discharge for confined aquifer (Q) ;
=2πkB(h2h1)ln(r2r1)
where, B = Aquifer thickness
K = Permeability of the aquifer
r = Radial distance
h = Piezometric head.
