Question

A 5 g piece of ice at 20C is put into 10 g of water at 30C. Assuming that heat is exchanged only between the ice and the water. Then find the heat required for phase change. Specific heat capacity of ice =2100 Jkg1C1. Specific heat capacity of water =4200 Jkg1C1 and latent heat of fusion of ice 3.36×105 J kg1.

Solution

The correct option is A

1680 J

Heat gives by water (30 C)=0.01×4200×30=1260 J
Heat required to bring the ice to 0 C
=0.005×2100×20=210 J

Heat required for phase change = 0.005×3.36×105 = 1680 J
