Question

(A) A mass of 4 Kg rests on a horizontal plane . The plane is gradually inclined until at an angleθ=15o with the horizontal,the mass just beings to slide, What is the coefficient of static friction between the block and the surface?
(B) Two blocks of masses 1 Kg and 2 Kg are connected by an intextensible string which passes over a frictionless pulley as shown in the figure.calculate the acceleration of these blocks

Solution

(a) Here, friction force is balanced by weight of the body.

mgsin15=μmgcos15

μ=tan15

=tan(4530)

μ=(tan45tan30)1+tan45tan30

μ=313+1

(B) For block A

Tmg=ma

T=(10+a).........(1)

For block B

mgT=ma

T=m(ga)

T=2(10a).......(2)

Solve equation (1) and (2)

a=103m/s2
