(a) A piece of wire $\frac{13}{16}$ metre long broke into two pieces. One piece was $\frac{5}{8}$ metre long. How long is the other piece?

(b) Sarita bought $\frac{1}{5}$ metre of ribbon and Lalita $\frac{3}{4}$ metre of ribbon. What is the total length of the ribbon they bought?

Total length of the wire = $\frac{13}{16}$The length of remaining piece of wire will be, $=\frac{13}{16}-\frac{5\times 2}{8\times 2}=\frac{13}{16}-\frac{10}{16}=\frac{13-10}{16}=\frac{3}{16}$

The length of remaining wire is $\frac{3}{16}$ metres.

(b)
Total length of ribbon is,
$=\frac{1}{5}+\frac{3}{4}=\frac{1\times 4}{5\times 4}+\frac{3\times 5}{4\times 5}=\frac{4}{20}+\frac{15}{20}=\frac{19}{20}$
So the total length of the ribbon is $\frac{19}{20}$ metres.
