(a) A solid sphere of radius 15 cm is melted and recast into solid right circular cones of radius 2.5 cm and height 8 cm. Calculate the number of cones recast.

(b) A hollow sphere of internal and external radii 6 cm and 8 cm respectively is melted and recast into small cones of base radius 2 cm and height 8 cm. Find the number of cones. [6 MARKS]

(a) Number of cones recast
=Volume of the sphereVolume of a cone=43π×15313π×2.5×2.5×8

=4×33756.25×8=1350050=270 cones


(b) Volume of hollow sphere
= No. of cones × volume of a cone
No. of cones =43π(8363)13π×22×8
=4(512216)32=37
