Question

A bakelite beaker has volume capacity 500 cc at 30C. When it is partially filled with Vm volume (at 30C) of mercury. It is found that the unfilled volume of the beaker remains constant as temperature is varies. If γbeaker=6×106 C1 and γmercury=1.5×104 C1, where γ is the coefficient of volume expansion, then Vm (in cc) is close to _____.

Solution

Volume capacity of beaker, V0=500 cc

According to the question,

ΔVbeaker=ΔVmercury

V0γbeakerΔT=VmγmΔT
Vm=V0γbeakerγm
Vm=500×6×1061.5×104=20 cc
