Question

A ball is moving with a speed of 5 m/s towards a heavy wall which is moving towards the ball with speed 2 m/s as shown in figure. Assuming the collision to be perfectly elastic, find the speed of the ball and speed of the wall immediately after the collision.

Solution

The correct option is C 9 m/s, 2 m/s
Given,
Mass of the ball (m1) is very small compared to the mass of the wall (m2).
i.e m1<<m2

Speed of ball before collision (u1)=5 m/s
Speed of wall before collision (u2)=2 m/s
(rightward +ve)

Let the speed of the ball after collision (v1)=v m/s
Speed of the wall after collision (v2)=v m/s
In case of elastic collision, when m1<<m2
v1=u1+2u2 ; v2=u2
i.e v=5+4=9 m/s
& v=2 m/s (both rightward)
