Question

A ball is thrown upward with an initial velocity vo from the surface of the earth. The motion of the ball is affected by a drag force equal to mγv2 (where, m is mass of the ball, v is its instantaneous velocity and γ is a constant). Time taken by the ball to rise to its zenith (maximum height) is

Solution

The correct option is B 1γgtan1(γgv0)
Given, drag force , F=mγv2.....(i)
Using Newton's second law,
F=ma.....(ii)
Comparing Eqs. (i) and (ii) , we get
a=γv2
Net retardation of the ball when thrown vertically upward is
anet=(g+γv2)=dvdt
dv(g+γv2)=dt .....(iii)
By integrating both sides of Eq. (iii) in known limits, i.e. when the ball thrown upward with velocity vo and then reaches to its zenith i.e for maximum height at time t = t, v=0
0vodv(γv2+g)=t0dt
or 1γ0vo1[(gγ)2+v2]dv=t0dt
1γ.1gγ.⎢ ⎢ ⎢ ⎢tan1⎜ ⎜ ⎜ ⎜vgγ⎟ ⎟ ⎟ ⎟⎥ ⎥ ⎥ ⎥0vo=t
[1x2+a2dx=1atan1(xa)]
1γg.tan1(γvog)=t
t=1γg.tan1(γvog)
