Question

A ball moving with a momentum of 5kgm/s strikes against a wall at angle of 45 and is deflected at the same angle. Calculate the change in momentum.

Open in App
Solution

Given,

P=5kgm/s

θ=450

from the figure given above, there is no change in perpendicular component and cancel each other.

The initial momentum along the x-axis,

Pi=Pcosθ

The final momentum along the x-axis,

Pf=Pcosθ

So, change in momentum,

ΔP=PfPi

ΔP=2Pcosθ

ΔP=2×5×cos450

ΔP=7.071kgm/s
