Question

A ball of mass 10Kg moving with a velocity 103ms-1 along the X-axis, hits another ball of mass 20Kg which is at rest. After the collision, the first ball comes to rest and the second one disintegrates into two equal pieces. One of the pieces starts moving along the Y-axis at a speed of 10ms-1. The second piece starts moving at a speed of 20ms-1 at an angle θ(degree) with respect to the X-axis. The configuration of pieces after the collision is shown in the figure. The value of θ to the nearest integer is ________.

Solution

Step 1: Given data and diagram

We are given with the data,

Mass of first ball, m1=10Kg

Mass of second piece of ball moving with speed 10ms-1,m2=10Kg

Velocity of first ball, v1=103ms-1along x-axis

Velocity of second ball, v2=20cosθ along x-axis

The diagrammatic representation of the system is given below,

Step 2: Calculating the value of 'θ'

Now applying law of conservation of linear momentum along x-axis, we have,

m1v1=m2v210×103=10×20cosθ1003=200cosθcosθ=32θ=300

Hence, the value of 'θ' nearest to integer is equal to 300.
