Question

A balloon has a volume of 2.27 L at 1 bar external pressure. It is known that it bursts when the pressure (external) reaches 0.2 bar. What would be the volume at which it bursts? Assume that a finite number of moles occupy the balloon and that the temperature remains constant.

Solution

The correct option is A

11.35 L

Boyle's Law gives the pressure - volume relationship of gases at room temperature.

According to Boyle's Law,

P1V

⇒ According to Boyles law, P1V1=P2V2

If P1 is 1 bar, V1 will be 2.27 L.

If P2=0.2 bar, then

V2=P1V1P2=1 bar×2.27 L0.2 = 11.35 L

Since the balloon bursts at 0.2 bar pressure, the volume at which this would happen would be 11.35 L
