Suppose F = upthrust due to buoyancy
Then while descending, we find Mg - F = Mα..............................(i)

When ascending, we have F - (M - m)g = (M - m) α ....................(ii)

Solving Eqs. (i) and (ii), we get m=[2αα+g]M
