Question

A bar magnet has no markings to indicate its poles. How would you find out near which end is its north pole located?

Solution

The bar magnet can be tied with a string and suspended in the air till it comes to rest. The freely suspended bar magnet would come to rest in the N-S direction. Therefore, the end that points in the north direction would be the north pole of the magnet.
