Question

A bar of length L0=3.77 m is placed on two rigid supports as shown in the figure. As a result of rise in temperature by 32 C , bar cracks at its centre and buckles upward as shown in the figure. The fixed distance between the supports is also L0=3.77 m and coefficient of linear expansion of the bar is 25×106/ C. Find the rise x of centre of the bar.

Solution

The correct option is A 0.075 m
Given:
Change in temperature, ΔT=32 C
Length of bar, L0=3.77 m
Coefficient of linear expansion α=25×106/ C
Let half - length of the bar (Lo2)is expanded by Δx then,
Δx=L02×αΔT
Δx=3.772×25×106×32=1.5×103 m

Now, from figure, we can say that ,
x=(L02+Δx)2(L02)2
x=(3.772+1.5×103)2(3.772)2
x=0.075 m
Hence, option (a) is correct.
