The formula for internal resistance r of cell using potentiometer is given by

Where
l1 - Balancing length when only the battery is connected.
l2 - Balancing length when the battery is shunted by a resistance

Internal resistance of cell, r=1 Ω
Given: R=4 Ω
l1=84 cm
Let the new balancing length when 4 Ω resistor is connected be l3
r=(l1l3l3)R
1=(l1l31)4
