Given, initial speed of the bus, $u = 60 k m p h = 60 \times \frac{5}{18} = 16.67 m s^{- 1}$
final speed of the bus, $v = 40 k m p h = 40 \times \frac{5}{18} = 11.11 m s^{- 1}$
Time taken to decrease the speed, t = 5 s
We know, acceleration, $a = \frac{v - u}{t} = \frac{11.11 - 16.67}{5} = - 1.11 m s^{- 2}$
