Solution

The correct option is B 34 C
Let the surrounding temperature be T0.

Case 1: The mean temperature of the body when it cools down from 50 C to 45 C in 5 minutes is,

T=50+452=47.5 C

Using Newton's law of cooling,

dTdt=k(TT0)

50455=k(47.5T0)

1=k(47.5T0) ...(i)

Case 2 : The mean temperature of the body when it cools down from 45 C to 40 C in 8 minutes is,

T=45+402=42.5 C

So, using Newton's law of cooling

45408=k(42.5T0)

58=k(42.5T0) ....(ii)

Dividing equation (i) by (ii),

85=47.5T042.5T0

3408 T0=237.55T0

T034 C

Hence, (B) is the correct answer.
Why this question?

Since the given situation happening at room temperature. So, in this case, the temperature difference between body and surrounding will be small compared to surrounding. Hence, we can use newton's law of cooling.
