Question

a body of volume 100cm3 is completely immersed in water.calculate the upthrust on the body.
density of water=1000kg/m3

Solution

Upthrust or Upward Thrust (F) is the force exerted vertically upwards by the liquid (here it is water) as a response to the weight of the object placed in it. It is given as

F = Vρg

here V is the volume of the water displaced which is equal to the volume of the immersed rod = 100cm3 = 10-4 cm3

ρ is the density of water = 103 kg/m3

g is the acceleration due to gravity = 10 m/s2

So, by substituting the values in the above equation, we get the final result

F = 1N

So, the upward thrust exerted by water is 1 Newtons.
