Question

A bracket carrying a load of 125 kN is connected to the column flange by means of two horizontal fillet welds, each of 180 mm effective length and 10 mm thick. The load acts at 75 mm from the face of the column as shown in figure. The throat stress developed is _______.

Solution

Throat thickness
t=0.7×10=7 mm

Direct stress
fa=P2Lt=125×10002×180×7=49.6 N/mm2

Moment
M=125×103×75=9.375×106 N-mm

The resisting couple due to bending in the two welds
=(180×7×fb)×120
(180×7×fb)×120=9.375×106

fb=62 N/mm2

Resultant stress
fR=3f2a+f2b=3×49.62+622=105.95 N/mm2
