Question

A bulb of constant volume is attached to a very thin manometer tube as shown in figure. Gas start leaking through a small hole in the bulb causing change in pressure as:
dPdt=kP2----- 1 ref. image
Where k is constant and P is pressure at any instant.
Initial height difference 'h' was 76 cm and after 10 min 'h' was 38 cm. Calculate the value of k in unit of atm1hr1.

Solution

Solution:-
dPdt=kP2(Given)
dPP2=kdt
Integrating both sides, we have
Here,
For pressure - P0P
For time - t0t

PP0dPP2=tt0kdt

[1P]PP0=[kt]tt0

[1P]PP0=k[t]tt0

[1P1P0]=k[tt0]

Here,
P0=76+76=152cm Hg=2atm
P=76+38=114cm Hg=32atm
t0=0
t=10 min=16hr
(2312)=k(160)
16=k6
k=1atm1hr1

Hence the value of k is 1atm1hr1.
