Solution

Time taken by the car to cover the first 100 km of the journey = Distance travelledSpeed=100 km60 km/h=53h

Time taken by the car to return the same distance = Distance travelledSpeed=100 km40 km/h=52h

Total distance travelled by car in the whole journey = 200 km

Total time taken by the car to complete the whole journey = 53h+52h=1256h

The average speed of the whole journey = Total distance travelled Totaltime taken=200 km1256h=200×6125km/h=9.6 km/h

Hence, the car covers the whole journey at an average speed of 9.6 km/h.
