Let the each half of the running time be $t$ .
During first half time, speed of car is $80 k m / h$
Distance covered $d_{1} = 80 t k m$
During second half time, speed of car is $40 k m / h$
Distance covered $d_{2} = 40 t k m$
Total distance covered $d = d_{1} + d_{2} = 80 t + 40 t = 120 t$
Total time taken $T = 2 t$
Average speed $v_{a v g} = \frac{d}{T} = \frac{120 t}{2 t} = 60 k m / h r$
