Question

A car type has a volume of 10 litre when inflated. The tyre is inflated to a pressure of 3 atm at 17C with air. Due to driving the temperature of the tyre increases to 47C :

(a) What would be the pressure at this temperature?

(b) How many litres of air measured at 47C and pressure of 1 atm should be let out to restore the tyre to 3 atm at 47C?

Solution

Given V=10 litre, P=3 atm, T=290k
(a) After driving V=10 litre, P=? T=320K

P1T1=P2T2

or 3290=P2320

or P2=320×3290=3.31 atm

(b) At 470C

Now volume is to be taken out so that tyre is left at a pressure this air will occupy V litre

P1V1=P2V2 (temperature is 470C)

0.310×10=1×V2

V2=3.1 litre .
