Question

A certain quantity of gas occupies a volume of 0.8 L collected over water at 300K and a pressure 0.92 bar. The same gas occupies a volume of 0.08 L at STP in dry conditions. Calculate the aqueous tension at 300K.

Solution

Pdry gas=Pobservedaqueous tension
Aqueous tension = PobservedPdry gas
Pobserved=0.9atm
Pdry gas=?
According to combined gas law
P1V1T1=P2V2T2[Experimental condition STP condition]
Pressure of dry gas P1=P2V2T2×T1V1=1×0.080283×2730.1=0.7717atm
Aqueous tension = PobservedPdry gas=0.90.7717atm=0.1283atm
