Question

A certain sound has a frequency of 256 Hz and wavelength of 1. 3 m. calculate the speed with which this sound Travels .what difference would be felt by a listner between this sound and another sound travelling at the same speed but of wavelength 2. 6 m?

Solution

frequency=256 Hz
wavelength=1.3 m

we have equation

velocity=frequency×wavelength
=256×1.3=332.8 m/s

for the second sound of same velocity and wavelength of 2.6m

frequency =velocity/wavelength
=332.8/2.6=128 Hz

so the listner will hear the second sound with half the frequency of the first one.

The pitch of a sound is dictated by the frequency of the sound wave, while the loudness is dictated by the amplitude.
