Question

A charge of +2 nC is separated from a charge of -2 nC by 1.5 cm forming an electric dipole. What torque acts on the dipole moment vector makes an angle of 300 in the clockwise sense with the field of magnitude 5000 N/C?

Solution

Magnitude of dipole moment P=ql=2×109×1.5×102=3×1011 Cm
Angle between P and E, θ=30o
Torque τ=PEsinθ
Or τ=3×1011×5000×0.5=7.5×108 Nm
