Let side length of the square board $= x$
Area of one square in the chess board $= 6.25 c m^{2}$
Area of $64$ square $= 64 \times 62.5$
$\Rightarrow {(x - 4)}^{2} = 400$
$\Rightarrow (x - 4) = \sqrt{400}$
$\Rightarrow (x - 4) = 20$
$\Rightarrow x = 20 + 4$
$∴ x = 24 c m .$
Hence, the answer is $24.$
