Solution

We can find the class mark of each interval by using the relation:

xi =Upper class limit + lower class limit2

Now, taking 17 as assumed mean a, we can calculate di and fidi as following:

Number of daysNumber of students fixidi=xi16fidi0611314154610108990101471253514204170020284247282838333164838401392222Total40 181

Now, we observe that:

fi=40fidi=181mean ¯x=a+(fidifi)=17+(18140)

=17-4.525

=12.475

=12.48

So, mean number of days for which a student was absent is 12.48 days.
