Solution

(i) Let the assume mean A = 17.

We know that mean,

Now, we have.

Putting the values in the above formula, we have

Hence, the mean number of days a student was absent is 12.475.

(ii)

Number of Days Mid-Value (xi) Number of Students (fi) fixi
0−6 3 11 33
6−10 8 10 80
10−14 12 7 84
14−20 17 4 68
20−28 24 4 96
28−38 33 3 99
38−40 39 1 39
fi=40 fixi=499

We know

Mean=fixifi
∴ Mean number of days a student was absent=fixifi=49940=12.475

Hence, the mean number of days a student was absent is 12.475.
