Methane (CH4) is used in making chloromethane (CH3Cl) as shown below.

CH4(g) + Cl2(g) 250 °C 400 °C−−−−−−−−UV light CH3Cl(g) + HCl(g)

This process is called chlorination of methane. It takes place in the presence of ultraviolet rays. However, ethane (C2H6), propane (C3H8) and butane (C4H10) can also undergo chlorination to give chloroethane (C2H5Cl), chloropropane (C3H7Cl) and chlorobutane (C4H9Cl) respecticely along with hydrogen chloride (HCl) gas.
