Question

A cylindrical vessel of height 500mm has an orifice(small hole at its bottom). The orifice is initially closed and water is filled in it up to height H. Now the top is completely sealed with a cap and the orifice at the bottom is opened. Some water comes out from the orifice and the water level in the vessel becomes steady with height of water column being 200mm. Find the fall in height (in mm) of water level due to opening of the office. [Take atmospheric pressure =1.0×105N/m2, density of water =1000 kg/m3 and g=10m/s2. Neglect any effect of surface tension].

Solution

A cylinder vessel of high h=500mm
P=P0ρgh=98×103N/m2P0V0=PV
(according to Charles and Boyle's law)
105A(500H)=98×103A(500200)500A×105AH×105=9.8×103A×50098×103×A×200500A×105+98×103A×200=98×103A×500+AH×105A(500×105+98×200×103)=A(98×103×500+H×105)H=206mmLevelfall=206200mm=6mm
