Question

A decapeptide (Mol. Wt. 796) on complete hydrolysis gives glycine (Mol. Wt. 75), alanine and phenylalanine. Glycine contributes 47.0% to the total weight of the hydrolysed products. The number of glycine units present in the decapeptide is ___.

Solution

Total wt. of amino acids after addition of 9 mole of H2O = 796 + 9 × 18 = 958
Now 47% is glycine, then total mass of glycine = 958 × 0.47 = 450
Therefore, no. of glycine molecules = 45075=6
