  • When one or more atoms of the same or different elements combine with each other chemically, a compound is formed.
  • In a compound, particles are combined in a fixed ratio by mass.
  • For example - Water, Sodium chloride, Sugar, etc.

(b) Some characteristics of compounds are as follows -

  1. In nature, a pure chemical substance is homogeneous.
  2. A chemical complex can be dismantled into two or more elements. Chemical methods can be used to synthesize it from these elements.
  3. A chemical compound has a fixed composition, which means that its constituent elements combine in a predetermined weight ratio.
  4. A chemical compound has its own set of qualities that are separate from those of its constituent elements.
